Delta Festival Ballet announces principal casting for it’s 34th annual production of The Nutcracker. This year’s production will be headlined by Russian ballerina Irina Sapozhnikova as the Sugar Plum Fairy with Joseph Phillips as her Cavalier. They will be traveling directly from The State Primorsky Opera and Ballet Theater in Vladivostok, Russia to New Orleans for their only American performance this season. The couple will also perform the Snow Pas de Deux at the close of Act I, giving audiences the chance to experience their dynamic artistry twice in each performance.

Ms. Sapozhnikova, a Russian native and graduate of Nureyev Bashkir Choreography College, has performed soloist roles in countries including Brazil, Portugal, France, Thailand, China, Mexico, Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Latvia, and Finland. She holds numerous international ballet awards and was the winner of the 2014 International Ballet Artists Competition in Jackson, Mississippi.

Mr. Phillips has been hailed by Pointe Magazine as “Ballet’s Golden Boy” and holds more gold medals than any other American male dancer. He was awarded Les Etoiles de Ballet in both Cannes and Paris. In 2013, he created a major stir in the American ballet community when he left American Ballet Theater and “defected” to Russia. New Orleans audiences remember his bravura performances with DFB in 2008 and 2010.

Ms. Sapozhnikova and Mr. Phillips will be joined by DFB’s oustanding local professionals including Griffin Collins III, Candice Holley, Jessica Touchet, and Jessica Van Vrancken. Celebrated New Orleans actor, Cutting Jahncke will reprise his role as Herr Drosselmeyer.

The professional cast is joined by the Youth Corps of over 100 young dancers from New Orleans, Metairie, Kenner, Mandeville, Covington, Slidell, Houma, Harahan, Pearl River, Marrero, River Ridge, Raceland, Luling, Jefferson, Gretna, LaPlace and Hahnville.

The production is helmed by Artistic Directors, Joseph and Maria Giacobbe, who have produced
and directed DFB’s The Nutcracker since 1981. They are assisted by Ballet Master, Richard Rholdon,
who also appears as Mayor Stahlbaum in Act I’s Party Scene. Performed to live accompaniment by
the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Glenn Langdon, this classic ballet is a must-see
New Orleans Christmas tradition.

Performances will be held at Tulane Univerisity’s Dixon Hall on December 18th at 7:00pm and December 19th & 20th at 2:00pm. Tickets go on sale November 1st and can be purchased online on this website or by calling our office at 504-888-0931. A link to online Ticket Purchases will be available on this webpage beginning November 1st.
